ALICE IN CHAINS Guitarist JERRY CANTRELL On The Mend After Surgery
December 12, 2005Guitar great Jerry Cantrell of ALICE IN CHAINS underwent surgery last week after complaining of acute pain in his left shoulder. He was admitted to Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles where Dr. Stephen J. Lombardo, a noted sports medicine practitioner, attended him.
The surgery included the repair of Cantrell's glenoid labrum, a ring of fibrocartilage that is part of the shoulder joint as we as the removal of bone spurs. Cantrell's condition is not uncommonly found in musicians and athletes such as baseball players. Dr. Lombardo, who is team physician for the NBA Lakers and WNBA Sparks and is orthopaedic consultant to both the L.A. Dodgers and Angels as well as the NHL L.A. Kings, noted, "I would consider Jerry Cantrell an athlete as well." He added "Jerry is a great patient," and predicted a complete recovery. "The prognosis is excellent," he stated, "Jerry should be able to resume his full range of activity in a few months."
For his part, Cantrell stated, "It's tough not being able to play for a while but I'm really looking forward to getting back out and performing without being in constant pain. Big thanks to Dr. Lombardo and the staff at Kerlan-Jobe for getting this sorted out."
Cantrell's next scheduled performance is set for March 10 when he and his ALICE IN CHAINS bandmates, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez, are scheduled to appear in an episode of VH1's "Decades Rock Live!", a tribute to HEART that will take place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. A spring air date for the program is to be announced shortly.
